It probably won’t have escaped your notice that there isn’t much about fees on this website. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the cost of your knee/hip surgeon is just one of numerous costs involved in surgery.
Book your knee or hip replacement in the Cotswolds, Cheltenham or Gloucester and the most cost effective way of doing it is via the hospital where you’ll have the treatment.
Each hospital offers ‘package’ prices which include all the numerous elements that will need to form part of your healthcare, from surgeon and theatre staff to physios, the cost of your room, bed and medication.
So rather than getting involved in discussions over a range of costs, most of which the surgeon has no connection with or influence over, it makes sense to refer patients to the hospital so that patients have a complete understanding of the costs involved.
The second reason we don’t talk a great deal about costs on this site – and it’s very much connected to the first – is that separating medical and financial helps to protect the service patients receive.
As long as hospitals handle financial matters, surgeons are able to deliver the treatment a patient needs, rather than a treatment that fits a certain price.

How much does a hip or knee replacement cost?
We can at least talk in terms of averages.
In the UK, the average cost of a knee replacement is £14,000. The average cost of a hip replacement is around £12,500.
If we consider private knee replacement in a local Cheltenham hospital, the things that may influence whether costs are above or below average will include:
- Whether you need a total or partial knee replacement
- The number of follow up reviews you need
- The number of physiotherapy sessions you need

What’s included in my joint replacement package?
The detail does vary a little from location to location, but generally speaking, the package price that you’ll pay to the hospital will include your surgery and stay. It will also include an in-hospital physiotherapy/mobilisation session, a follow up with me at six weeks and another at six months.
As we explore here, it’s important to factor in all these elements when weighing UK costs with the cost of surgery overseas.
How to pay for private joint surgery in Gloucestershire
My patients access private healthcare in one of two ways.
If they have private health insurance, they:
- Get a referral from their GP
- Talk to their insurer to check that their treatment will be covered
- Make their appointment with me. I’m fee-assured with all major insurers, which means you won’t face any unexpected costs once the insurer agrees to pay.
Alternatively, you can self-pay, either using savings or credit (the hospital may be able to help you with a payment plan). If you choose this route, you may not need a GP referral.
If you’d like to discuss any of the above or book your appointment, please get in touch or call 01242 246549
