About alexander dodds
Alex was appointed as a specialist knee and hip Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in January 2015. He completed his orthopaedic training in London, working across several major teaching hospitals and gaining experience in the latest surgical techniques. He then undertook advanced fellowship training in Australia at a leading private hospital, where he specialised in sports injuries and arthroplasty.
He now has a busy, high-volume NHS and private practice, regularly performing soft tissue knee surgery, including ACL and meniscal surgery, as well as joint replacement surgery such as partial and total knee replacement and hip replacement surgery. He currently uses the VELYS™ robotic-assisted system to perform robot-assisted total knee replacements. He also acts as knee surgeon for Cheltenham Town Football Club.
Alex holds a research doctorate (MDRes) from Imperial College London and is internationally recognised for his pioneering work on the anatomy and biomechanics of the knee, with a particular focus on the anterolateral structures of the knee. His research fellowship, supervised by Professor Andrew Amis and Mr Andy Williams, focused on improving knee biomechanics to aid return to sport in elite athletes. The techniques developed through this work have since gained widespread adoption in the UK. He is happy to discuss extra-articular reconstruction techniques with appropriate patients.
In 2019, he was elected to the prestigious role of Honorary Secretary of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), representing over 600 knee surgeons in the UK, and completed his term in May 2022. During this time, he played a major role in organising the BASK Spring Congress and BOA knee revalidation sessions, contributing to national education, policy development, and the advancement of best practice in knee surgery. He remains actively involved in professional leadership and is currently a member of several national working groups, including the BASK ACL Injury Prevention Group and the BASK Arthroplasty Working Group. He is also a member of the National Joint Registry RCC Committee and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Orthopaedic Committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.
Alex is currently the Specialty Director for Elective Orthopaedic Surgery at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has led significant work to improve surgical outcomes within the Trust and previously served as Governance Lead for the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department, as well as Infection Control Lead, where he introduced measures to minimise the risk of surgical infection. In his NHS role, he is an Educational Supervisor for trainee surgeons and junior doctors and recently organised the Knee Education Term for senior Severn Deanery trainees. He has also organised several national orthopaedic training courses. In 2025, he was voted Trainer of the Year across all consultants and GPs in Gloucestershire for excellence in junior doctor educational supervision.
Outside of his clinical and leadership roles, Alex spends as much time as possible with his family and three children. He is a keen runner, having completed several half and full marathons, is currently learning to play the piano, and enjoys playing golf — with good humour rather than great skill.
